Good Morning DISD Community.

I hope you all had a lot of good family-time during Thanksgiving and your students came back ready to work hard and finish the semester strong.

Thinking about November, I want to take a minute to explain the unexpected shut-down of the elementary school and the plans to proceed from here. When we made the decision on Wednesday, November 10, we had 55 elementary students out sick and more coming into the nurse’s office feeling ill. We had between 25-30% of our teachers and paras out, and had gotten to the point we couldn’t combine classes anymore. We closed in the best interest of the students and staff to allow for sanitizing and deep cleaning. We had some parents very upset and we are truly sorry for any inconvenience we caused. We understand how hard it is when you are trying to hold down a job and have to take off unexpectedly to stay home with your children. We did not make the decision lightly. We felt we had to close in order to keep the rest of the students and staff from getting sick.

That being said, we will need to make up those days. In order to inflict the least amount of upheaval to the calendars and plans of our students and parents, I will take a proposition to the Board at the December meeting which will allow our elementary students to return to school on January 4th, which is scheduled to be a teacher work day and February 2nd, calendared as a Staff Development Day. This is going to affect ELEMENTARY STUDENTS ONLY; secondary students will still be off those days. I hope this doesn’t cause undue hardship on our families, but this is the least invasive of the solutions we have. If the Board approves a calendar change, we will send the message out through the alert system on Tuesday. Some of you have suggested we use the ½ days we have calendared before Christmas and Spring Break. While these times would work for us as far as instructional minutes, they won’t help us as far as actual instruction: the days before a holiday are filled with excitement and/or parties, and student focus on actual learning is minimal.

As we go into our holiday season, we will focus on the many things we have accomplished this year and we will remain thankful for the teachers and staff we have on our team. Danbury ISD Chief Bracken, one of our new team members is working with Mrs. Williams and me to try to solve some of the traffic congestion problems during drop off and pick up times. Some of our young students crossing Avenue F and Main Street have been endangered this year and we must find a way to resolve the problems for our students walking home. Hopefully, we can announce our new plan before the holiday break and begin the trial run when we return to school in January.
